The Buffalo, or Cape Buffalo, is unlocked by completing the Zebra challenge.

Biology

The cape buffalo is in the genus Syncerus. The horns of cape buffalo are fused at the base, forming a continuous bone shield referred to as a “boss". From the base, the horns diverge, then bend down, and then smoothly curve upwards and outwards. Owing to its unpredictable nature, which makes it highly dangerous to humans, the cape buffalo has never been domesticated.

Life as a Buffalo

The Buffalo is the fourth non-DLC size 5 grazer it is possible to unlock. The Buffalo's movement speed is a high average, but its bulky frame often makes it feel much heavier and slower. Unlike the problems imposed on the Dairy Cow, the Buffalo is far more suited for combat, with high base Life, Attack, and Defense. While the Buffalo's attacks are well suited for breaking an opponent's defense, it will still struggle against bigger groups of large predators.

Unique Challenges:

  • Claim the Hippo's territory - Unlocks Hippo
  • Complete all C challenges - Rewards Hero Mask

Buffalos as Prey

The Buffalo is seldom seen in the early years, but in the mid to late years they can often be found in open areas, especially those around the Yamanote Line where they can often be found in small herds. They are likely to ignore smaller predators unless they are provoked, and if they choose to fight back can perform the Charge enemy skill, where they will deal heavy damage and knock down any target in their direct path. If you see a Buffalo ready a charge, it is best to jump quickly out of its way. For larger predators, Buffalos are a good source of calories and their lower speed makes them easier to chase down if they spot you than a Thoroughbred.

Sometimes, an event will occur where "The Buffalo of X have begun to migrate." Entering the area will show that there are a massive amount of Buffalo walking slowly in one direction to an end of the territory. While this will be good for larger predators, as they will flee and not fight back when attacked, attacking with a smaller predator that does not have sufficient attack will likely end the player's game, as any nearby buffalo will react aggressively, and also alert buffalo further back to attack.
